San Lorenzo Ecolodge

San Lorenzo Ecolodge + Visitor Center
Ecolodge + Visitor Center / Colón, Panamá / End of Degree Project / 2017

This project consists of an eco-tourism complex in San Lorenzo National Park, more specifically in the area adjacent to Fort San Lorenzo. Dating back to 1598, Fort San Lorenzo is one of the earliest Spanish fortresses in America; and having been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is considered to have incredible historical importance. At the same time, it is located in one of Panama’s most abundant rainforests and owns a breathtaking view of the Atlantic Ocean from above a cliff. Even so, the site is actually in a complete state of abandonment.
The Complex’s goal is to revitalize this magical destination, not by interfering with the ruins, but by creating a parallel place of interest in the location. It is developed mostly along a canopy walkway of sighting at the height of the treetops, a height of approximately 25m; this walkway connects the ruin of Fort San Lorenzo with Tortuguilla beach, a nearby beach that is actually almost unreachable.

Areas

The project is composed of two zones, the public and the private one. The public zone is presented through a visitor center that has a variety of services; among them stand out a multipurpose platform and a small craft market. It also has an information booth, a small dock, access to the beach, spaces for camping, trails, gazebos, toilets, and showers.
The private area, on the other hand, consists of an eco-lodge in the form of cabins. An eco-lodge is a form of accommodation characterized by its interaction with nature and its sustainability. This zone of the complex, besides having 15 cabins for the guests, offers common areas with restaurant, swimming pool, lounges, and spa.
